The Management Of A Company - 1238 Words

How would you feel if you owned part of a company, but could not help make any decisions on the future of the company? Those who own majority of the company decide to hire mangers to make important decisions on your company. This is a general example on how shareholders run their company. Now wouldn t you rather help make decision, or be able to factor in ideas from the employees and community that has helped the business grow? If so, you might want to consider the stakeholders theory. Different stakeholders can hold varying amounts of influence and interest, within the organization. For example, consider a factory worker. An individual worker has large interests in the company, in terms of working conditions, salary, and benefits.†¦show more content†¦Internal stakeholders are described as â€Å"the managers and employees of a company.† Connected stakeholders are those that are beyond the immediate boundaries of the firm, while external stakeholders are those who are outside the firm. Some would say it is rather difficult to argue the stakeholders theory because there is not as much information on the subject as there is shareholders theory. They would argue that shareholders own most corporations; and presently, corporations owned by stakeholders would be unsuccessful in the long run. There has been some debate on the legitimacy of the concept of the stakeholder, according to Friedman and Miles. â€Å"The stakeholder concept has not gone unchallenged. Many have reiterated the alternative stakeholder positions. Others have challenged implications of the stakeholder concept for certain groups† (Friedman and Miles 118). Friedman and Miles go on to argue how stakeholders can weaken an organization, and even alter its long-term characteristics. Assume that the stakeholder concept is infallible and consider the example of the factory worker. The company is publicly owned and is located in a more economically developed country (MEDC), where it will have a weaker influence from the government when compared to government owned companies. Labor unions associated with the company will likely be strong and workers will have a higher influence than they would in a less economically developed country (LEDC) where unions are

Lehman Brothers And The Financial Crisis - 1365 Words

When the crisis began in the mid-2007 caused by sub-prime bubble, uncertainty among banks about the creditworthiness for their clients and customers deteriorated as they had majorly invested in very complex and overpriced financial products. As a result, the interbank market became volatile and risk premiums on interbank loans increased. Banks faced a serious liquidity problem, as they experienced major difficulties to revolve their short-term debt. At that stage, policymakers still perceived the crisis primarily as a liquidity problem. However, it was widely believed that the European economy would be largely safe to the financial turbulence. The real economy, though slowing, was thriving on strong fundamentals such as rapid export growth†¦show more content†¦Faulty investments and real estate and banking bubbles had cost some citizens their savings, particularly in majorly impacted countries such as Spain. During the credit crunch, many commercial European banks lost money on their exposure to bad debts in US (e.g. subprime mortgage debt bundles). The credit crunch caused a decrease in bank lending and investments; this resulted in a serious recession (economic downturn). European house prices fell due to credit crunch and recession which increased the losses of many European banks. The recession caused a steep deterioration in government funds. As a result of negative growth, the government received less tax: (high unemployment leading to less income tax; less people spending lead to less VAT; less company profits lead to less corporation tax etc. The government also had to spend more on unemployment benefits). GDP fell (see chart below) and debts rose rapidly, resulting in increase in Debt to GDP ratio (see chart below). Unemployment figures were at 5% in Germany at the lower end, while it reached 27% in Greece and Spain. In an increasing number of countries a vicious cycle developed. Financial instability slowed economic growth, which resulted in lower tax revenues and increased governments’ debts. Due to higher debts, the cost of borrowing for governments rose and financial instability increased. More focus on budget deficit and less on the level of government debt, lack of surveillance of competitiveness and

Impementation Of Interactive Educational Platform

Question 1: Describe and explain the technology innovation what is the technology and how will it be used? Answer 1: Introduction Background Nigerian education sector is trying to develop itself through proving special focus on the English education. According to Bunch (2013) the disparity within the Nigerian education sector is the main reason for the lower growth. However, according to Cipi (2014) the major reason for the poor condition of the English education is lack of well-trained teachers and the absence of adequate study materials. According to the study by Oduma Ile (2014) the growth of the English education has started through the development of colonial culture within the country. However, this cultural development did not contributed in the growth of the English education within the country. One of the major reasons for the present condition is that after the independence the Nigerian government has not heavily contributed in the enrichment of the English education. The Nigerian schooling structure is divided into five formal divisions. Those divisions are: Primary schools, Secondary Education, Federal government schools, State owned schools and the Private Secondary Schools (Nigeria.usembassy.gov, 2012). However, the state owned and the federal government schools dominate the Nigerian education system. The growth of the private education sector in Nigeria is very poor because of its higher expenditure. The study by Wallenius (2010) has shown that the cost of private education is ranging within $1000 to $2000, which is beyond the limit of 90% of the population. However, a different study on the English education by Verhoeven et al. (2014) has shown a different picture. According to this study the English education quality within the private schools are quite moderate. However, the English education quality within the government owned education is very poor. It has been observed that the main reason for the poor quality is that lower infrastructure and the lack of adequate materials. Therefore, an interactive educational portal for the English education from basic to advance level could be very much helpful for the government education sections. 1.0 Description and Explanation of Technology innovation The smart class concept is very much familiar within the global education sector. However, this concept is not very much familiar with the Nigerian education sector. The private education sector has implemented this concept but they have implemented through a static method. Therefore, the interactive educational portal with an interactive character will be very much attractive to the students especially those who are in the primary and secondary schools. 1.0.1 Technical Descriptions and Description of the Attractive features The entire solution will be developed through the development of a cloud based interactive portal. The portal will be not displayed through the computer screens. However, the portal will be displayed through the interactive whiteboards. The main reason for selection of the interactive whiteboard is that over some of the surveys across the globe it has been seen that the interactive white board has increased the learning efficiency of the students by an average 17% compared to the other smart class techniques (Ietlb.com, 2015). The cloud server model will enable the government to reduce the implementation and the physical infrastructure cost. On the other hand through this cloud based model the Nigerian government will provide mobility to the English education as it can be accessed from anywhere with just one internet connection. On the other hand, this cloud based online interactive education portal will help the teachers to enrich themselves. This online portal will have a separate expert community and the purpose of this community will be knowledge sharing. Through this knowledge sharing expert community, the Nigerian teachers can develop themselves to deliver possible best in class English educational service to the primary and the secondary level students. According to Okoh (2008) it is very much important to grow the attraction of the students to get the success of any educational service of topic. Through the studies by Chimaka (2014) it has been observed that the most of the children are very much passionate with the favourite cartoon character and the most of the young youths are very much passionate with their imaginary super heroes. Therefore, to attract the students to the interactive platform these cartoon and the superhero characters will be replicated. However, through a primary survey it is very much important to identify the most popular characters for the each segment. The other attractive feature that will be included that if any of the students remains able to provide correct answer the interactive character will appreciate this effort through some of the lucrative appreciations. Through these exciting features, it is believed that the students especially from the primary and the secondary will gain their interest for the English education (Okpanachi, 2014). 1.0.2 Implementation Plan 1.0.2.1 Pre-Implementation Plan The implementation plan will be very much extensive and lengthy. The main reason for the selection of a long deadline plan is to ensure the quality of the system and its features. Therefore, the implementation plan will be initiated only after a successful pre-implementation planning. The pre-installing plan will be developed to develop an interest within the student and the teacher community (Gass et al. 2011). This pre-implementation will help to identify the senses from the teaching staffs and the community on the ICT application. The product development will be done parallel within the pre-implementation planning. The major reason for keeping the product development and the pre-implementation plan in line is that the pre-implementation findings will be included as an input to the system to make this system a well-structured one. On the other hand, the focus will be kept to analyze the current and the required infrastructure for the implementation of the interactive ICT platform within the robust education sector of Nigeria (Hickman, 2014). In this requirement analysis part, the major focus will be in the development of the physical infrastructures like the analysis of the present bandwidth, installation of the optical fibre network, development of the restricted Wi-Fi zones within the schools etc. 1.0.2.2 Final Implementation Planning Once this pre-implementation plan is successful, the main implementation will be initiated. The main implementation plan will be implements through couple of phases. The proposal for the main installation will be illustrated through the following paragraphs. The first stage will be to create positive awareness within the primary school teaching staffs. This awareness development plan will be done through the demonstration of the features and the interesting sides of the interactive classes. Moreover, a touch and feel kind of workshop will be created to make the teachers fully aware about the system and teaching techniques (Sari, 2014). In the second stage, a training and development program will be arranged through creating demographic division within the country. In this training and development workshop, teaching staffs will be trained extensively. The main motto of this training and development will be made the teachers fully accustomed with the new teaching system. Moreover, it the other thing that will be done through this training and development plan will educate the teaching staffs about the usage of the online learning knowledge sharing community for their own knowledge development (Verhoeven et al. 2014). The third stage will be designed fully to develop the awareness within the primary and the secondary schools students and the community about the new learning system and its effectiveness. In this stage the students and the parents will be demonstrated the system through an interactive seminars within the primary schools. This stage will help to develop primary level interest within the students. In the fourth stage the actual system implementation of the system will be done through the segregating the schools as per the demographics. During this system implementation, a separate monitoring mechanism will be developed to monitor and control the system implementation. Once the implementation is done in the primary schools, the same cycle will be carried out for the secondary schools. 1.0.2.3 Monitoring Mechanism Once the full system implementation has been done for both the primary and the secondary schools, a monitoring mechanism will be developed. This mechanism system will follow both the online and the offline monitoring of the entire process. The online monitoring will be done through calculating the hours of usage and through number of time a student is appreciated with the interactive character. This mechanism will help to identify the difference within the popularity for a particular given time (Adeoye Tomei, 2012). On the other hand, the offline monitoring will be done through fortnight schools visits by the application agencies. This measure will help them to understand the ground realities and the future development areas for this particular system. A separate monitoring mechanism will be carried out for the teaching staffs. This review will be done through an online test for the teachers to analyse how much capacity they have gained through the new system (Ogunfolu, 2014). The main motto of this system will be to identify the gaps in the present system. This gap analysis will help to develop a more concrete learning system for the future purpose. On the other hand, this monitoring will help to identify the key flexible areas that can improve the interactive learning environment. 1.0.2.4 Leadership for the Implementation Leadership will be very much important for this particular project implementation. According to Girgin Stevens (2005) the relationship between a teacher and a student is the most motivating factor for the promotion of any kind of learning initiative. Therefore, during the pre-implementation and implementation the primary and the secondary teaching staffs will be trained in such a way that they remain able to increase and maintain the interest from the students for interactive learning. The disparity within the education sector has created a negative impression on the English education. Therefore, a separate training will be provided to the English teachers so that they remain able to increase the interest for the English learning. This will help to increase the basic interest within the students before the final implementation of the proposed system has been done. 1.0.2.5 Sustainability of the proposed system The sustainability could be a major issue during the initial years. The main reason behind this is that it will be difficult to keep both the conventional education delivery mechanism and the interactive education delivering in line. The primary and the secondary education structure needs to be changed to redesign the examination structure. Therefore, the examination structure should be developed with the incorporation of ICT (Hersh, 2014). A separate planning from the government should be needed to promote the flexible education so that the students use this system from home though compatible devices. On the other hand, as the entire system is very much dependent upon the internet service. The government should focus concentration on the development of the infrastructure across the country (Adeoye Tomei, 2012). If these initiatives were taken by the appropriate authorities then this system will be a very much sustainable within the Nigerian education segment. Question 2: How does this innovation align with the overall curriculum planning in this educational context Answer 2: Aligning the Interactive learning with the present curriculum The interactive learning and evaluation follows a different set of process. This process is very much different from the conventional learning method. Therefore, the primary and the secondary education system need to be changed to meet the requirements of the interactive learning. The syllabus of the primary and the secondary education should be redesigned in accordance with the interactive learning. The evaluation process for the interactive learning is very much different from the conventional method. Therefore, a separate evaluation process needs to be implementing for the English only. This separation will take robust change within the education framework therefore once the interactive learning is implemented the evaluation system for the English language should be changed otherwise it will be very difficult to identify the positive or negative effect of the newly proposed system. On the other hand, a separate identity for each of the students needs to be created so that the individual growth can be analyzed. In the case of skills developments of the teaching staffs a separate skill development mechanism should be implemented so that with the growing levels quality education delivery does not becomes a problem. In the development of the course work, the levels should be keep through developing an equilibrium within the Nigerian quality and the international quality. This development should be done through the development of a consulting group with the Nigerian members and International experts. Question 3: What are the advantages, practical considerations, and limitations of implementing this innovation in this context? Answer 3: Advantages of the Interactive Learning The major advantage of the interactive learning is that it allows the student to learn things according to his/her grasping capacity. The long history of English negligence has created a negative will on the minds of the students. Therefore, through the implementation of ICT based education platform the teachers will remain able to develop the mindsets of the students through gradual improvement (LERA Blog, 2015). The other advantage of the interactive education have is as it is a very much interactive platform it increases the students interest on the topic. According to the study by Shah Khan (2009) through the interactive learning the interest increment is very much easy on a tough subject especially within the kids. The other advantage that the interactive learning has is that it helps in improving the communication skills of the students. Therefore, the implementation of the ICT based education in Nigeria will not only help the students to learn English it will also help to develop the English communication skills. This development in the English communication skills will help them to prosper in their future (LERA Blog, 2015). The major advantage that the cloud based interactive learning provides to the government is it significantly reduces the infrastructural development cost. The cloud is very easily accessible from any corner of the world. Therefore, if the Nigerian government wants to implement the interactive learning though a larger scales in future it will not incur major infrastructural cost for them (Kelly et al. 2005). The other thing that the interactive learning provides is the uniformity of the quality and delivery system. This system delivers the content and the other resources through a single pointy and through a single process, therefore the uniformity of the education delivery remains the same at any point (LERA Blog, 2015). Question 4: How will the innovation be evaluated? Answer 4: Practical Considerations and Limitations The practical considerations that should be taken into account while developing and implementing the interactive learning system will be: The content of the course should be designed in such a way that it becomes very much understandable to the all levels of the students. The content should use lower graphics for the initial time because as the ground level infrastructure is not so high and it requires time to develop it could have a adverse effect on the students and teachers. The training and development mechanism for the teachers should be designed in such a way that the teachers remain able to understand the content and remains able to deliver the quality education to the students. It has been observed that the quality of the English teachers is very poor within the country. Therefore, government should recruit new peoples and should develop them for delivering the optimum quality education to the students. The telecommunication network is not that much strong for the country. Therefore, if the government wants a very aggressive growth in the interactive learning then they should more aggressively develop the existing telecommunication network. The main reason behind this is that if the telecommunication network gets the required advancement then the interactive graphical content can be developed in more lucrative manner. This will increase the interest of the students on English (The Guardian, 2010). Evaluation of the Innovation The effectiveness of the system will be evaluated through assessing the growth of the English literacy within the primary and the secondary students. The growth of the students will be judged though their corresponding examinations. However, the penetration of the system will be judged through tracking the access time of the by system. This time tracking will be done though two ways. One is through tracking the system access time by an institute and by tracking the system access time by the individual students. Primarily the system evaluation will be done through this process. However, the evaluation process will be changed in accordance with the future improvements (Hersh, 2014). Future improvement aspects The key areas that can be developed in future to make this interactive learning more lucrative and flexible to the students are: The content should be in line with the international standards. The main reason for this up-gradation of the content is that it will allow the students to develop themselves in accordance with the international standards. The content should include more multimedia-based content so that it becomes easier to understand the meanings. The increment in the use of multimedia content will increase the students interest on the English learning. This will majorly help in increasing the interest of the primary level students. The implementation of the ICT should not only do for the English language. This kind of interactive learning should be implemented for the other areas like science, history, geography, engineering etc. The implementation in these areas will also improve the quality of the Nigerian education sector. The improvement in the quality of the education will increase the employability of the students in future. Conclusion The interactive learning portal through the digital whiteboard has the capacity and capability to increase the quality of the education. However, as the ground infrastructure and the teaching staff quality is not so high for the country therefore, before the large-scale implementation of the proposed project the development of the said resources should be done. The ICT based learning has the capacity to increase the efficiency of the students but as the country has major disparity within the education sector. Therefore, the implementation should be done very systematically and through taking specific areas at a time. Cloud based ICT education platform provides the flexible learning platform. However, to get the benefit this feature the government should develop its existing telecommunication network so that the interested students can access their learning contents from their home. Views of War in Apocalypse Now Essay Example For Students

Views of War in Apocalypse Now Essay The film, â€Å"Apocalpyse Now,† directed by Francis Ford Coppola, illustrates the psychologically damaging effects of the Vietnam war. As the story progresses, each character falls deeper into both an actual and metaphorical darkness, of the landscape and in their minds. The relationship between the landscape and mental psyche of the soldiers, is seen as the crew, made up of Chief, Lance, Chef, Clean, and Willard, venture further into enemy territory. The purpose of their mission is to escort Willard, the narrator and main character, to captain Kurtz. Kurtz is a former high-ranking military member, who has gone rogue, and seemingly lost his sanity. Each character loses their sense of self, as the horrors of war escalate around them, as their environment becomes more menacing. The film offers several insights into war, and human nature. The most prominent being that in a society, there are constraints to keep people from, â€Å"losing it. † The film makes the point that freedom from such societal constrains, leads to insanity, and that once pushed to a certain point, you can either reject or embrace the dark, savage, and primal part of your mind and soul. We will write a custom essay on Views of War in Apocalypse Now specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now This is seen in both Willard and Kurtz, where Willard ends up rejecting this notion, and Kurtz ends up accepting. Both Willard and Kurtz followed the same psychological path to insanity. This change is depicted in Willard, as he travels further and further up the Nung River, towards Kurtz. Once Willard reaches the compound, it represents the same psychological crossroads Kurtz came across. The psyche of a soldier is a direct product of the environment they are in. In an environment as absurd and horrible as Vietnam, insanity is only a matter of time and circumstance. In this sense I use insanity to describe the savage part of one’s self, that war indulges. The film makes the point that the soldier has the choice, to either accept or deny the insanity of war, as seen in Willard as he rejects succeeding Kurtz as the native’s leader. In the beginning of the film, Willard is shown intoxicated in his room, and eager to return to action. It becomes apparent that he is already damaged. This is his second tour of duty. He has chosen to return after failing to assimilate back to civilian culture in the U. S. During the scene, he punches a mirror in his drunken state, symbolically destroying himself. Later in the movie he states, â€Å"Someday this wars gonna end. Thatd be just fine with the boys on the boat. They werent looking for anything more than a way home. Trouble is, Id been back there, and I knew that it just didnt exist anymore. † This highlights the divide between Willard, and the rest of the crew. Willard has already been forever changed by the environment of Vietnam. The other crew members are unaware of this fact. They simply want to get in, get out, and go home. They do not yet understand that past a certain threshold, there really is no returning. To them, the mission is a means to an end. To Willard, it’s a way to get back in touch with his sense of self. He is further along the path to insanity, which continues as the movie progresses. As the crew moves up the river, Willard becomes increasingly intrigued with Kurtz. He constantly checks his dossier and reads about the man he is sent to kill. In the film, Willard states, It was no accident that I got to be the caretaker of Colonel Walter E. Kurtzs memory, any more than being back in Saigon was an accident. There is no way to tell his story without telling my own. .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7 , .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7 .postImageUrl , .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7 , .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7:hover , .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7:visited , .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7:active { border:0!important; } .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7:active , .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7 .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue395010c9ecd1a33a8e0618e9bbf71e7:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Causes Of The Civil War EssayAnd if his story is really a confession, then so is mine. As most of the narration in the film is presented in the past tense, this statement foreshadows the decision Willard makes at the end of the film. When saying that he is to being the caretaker of Kurtz’s memory, he is referring to Kurtz’s entrusting Willard to tell his story to his son. I believe he is talking about all the sons to follow. Kurtz understands that Willard is on a similar path, and that Willard understands why he has become what he is; why he has broken. Although Kurtz sets Willard up to be his successor in the jungle, it is almost as if he hopes Willard rejec ts his proposal. This is why he doesn’t immediately kill Willard. He wants him to take his story back with him, to share, in an attempt to prevent it from happening to those who follow in the future. Willard sees himself in Kurtz. At a point in the film, when reading the folder on Kurtz, it almost becomes unclear to Willard whether the words are Kurtz, or his own. In one of the movies flagship lines, Willard states, â€Å"Never get out of the boat. Absolutely goddamn right. Unless you were goin’ all the way. Kurtz got off the boat. He split from the whole fuckin’ program. † In saying this, Willard is referring to the boat as symbol for a soldiers sanity. Again, the environment serves as a parallel to a soldier’s psyche. He warns against leaving the societal constrains of the soldiers around you, and entering the jungle, where things become dark and foggy. Willard understands the path leading to insanity. He has traveled it. He has crossed the threshold, and managed to return. He understands why Kurtz has transformed. His whole narration of the film, is seemingly aimed at the soldiers to come. He is Kurtzs messenger. War is absurd. It exposes the darkest and foggiest parts of a soldiers mind and soul. The jungle represents this both literally, and metaphorically; Never get off the boat.

The Environment and Free-Range, Organic, and Local Meat

The Environment and Free-Range, Organic, and Local Meat Meat and other animal products are a serious environmental issue, leading the Atlantic chapter of the Sierra Club to call animal products, a Hummer on a plate. However, free-range, organic, or local meats are not the solution. Free-Range, Cage-Free, Pasture-Raised Meat, Eggs, and Dairy Factory farmers are not animal-hating sadists who confine the animals for fun. Factory farming started because scientists in the 1960s were looking for a way to meet the meat demands of an exploding human population. The only way the U.S. can feed animal products to hundreds of millions of people is to grow grain as an intense monoculture, turn that grain into animal feed, and then give that feed to intensively confined animals. There isn’t enough available land on earth to raise all livestock free-range or cage-free. The United Nations reports that livestock now use 30 percent of the earth’s entire land surface, mostly permanent pasture but also including 33 percent of the global arable land used to produce feed for livestock. Free-range, pasture-fed animals would require even more land on which to feed. They require even more food and water than factory farmed animals, because they are exercising more. To meet the increasing demand for grass-fed beef, South American rainforests are being cleared to produce more pasture for organic, grass-fed beef to be exported. Only 3 percent of the beef produced in the U.S. is grass-fed, and already, thousands of wild horses are displaced by this relatively small number of cattle. The U.S. alone has 94.5 million beef cattle. One farmer estimates that it takes 2.5 to 35 acres of pasture, depending on the quality of the pasture, to raise a grass-fed cow. Using the more conservative figure of 2.5 acres of pasture, this means we need approximately 250 million acres to create grazing pastures for every cow in the U.S. Thats over 390,000 square miles, which is more than 10 percent of all the land in the U.S. Organic Meat Raising animals organically does not reduce the amount of food or water required to produce meat, and the animals will produce just as much waste. Under the National Organic Program administered by the USDA, organic certification for animal products has certain minimum care requirements under 7 C.F.R. 205, such as access to the outdoors, shade, shelter, exercise areas, fresh air, and direct sunlight (7 C.F.R. 205.239). Manure must also be managed in a manner that does not contribute to contamination of crops, soil, or water by plant nutrients, heavy metals, or pathogenic organisms and optimizes recycling of nutrients (7. C.F.R. 205.203) Organic livestock must also be fed organically produced feed and cannot be given growth hormones (7 C.F.R. 205.237). While organic meat does offer some environmental and health benefits over factory farming in terms of residue, waste management, pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers, the livestock do not consume less resources or produce less manure. Animals raised organically are still slaughtered, and organic meat is just as wasteful, if not more wasteful, than factory farmed meat. Local Meat We hear that one way to be eco-friendly is to eat locally, to reduce the amount of resources required to deliver food to our table. Locavores strive to build their diet around food produced within a certain distance from their home. While eating locally might reduce your impact on the environment, the reduction is not as great as some might believe and other factors are more important. According to CNN, an Oxfam report titled, Fair Miles - Recharting the Food Miles Map, found that the way in which food is produced is more important than how far that food is transported. The amount of energy, fertilizer, and other resources used on the farm may have more environmental significance than the transportation of the final product. Food miles are not always a good yardstick. Buying from a small, local conventional farm may have a greater carbon footprint than buying from a large, organic farm thousands of miles away. Organic or not, the larger farm also has the economy of scale on its side. And as a 2008 article in The Guardian points out, buying fresh produce from halfway around the world has a lower carbon footprint than buying local apples out of season that have been in cold storage for ten months. In The Locavore Myth, James E. McWilliams writes: One analysis, by Rich Pirog of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, showed that transportation accounts for only 11% of foods carbon footprint. A fourth of the energy required to produce food is expended in the consumers kitchen. Still more energy is consumed per meal in a restaurant, since restaurants throw away most of their leftovers... The average American eats 273 pounds of meat a year. Give up red meat once a week and youll save as much energy as if the only food miles in your diet were the distance to the nearest truck farmer. If you want to make a statement, ride your bike to the farmers market. If you want to reduce greenhouse gases, become a vegetarian. While buying locally produced meat will reduce the amount of fuel needed to transport your food, it does not change the fact that animal agriculture requires an inordinate amount of resources and produces a great deal of waste and pollution. Tara Garnett of the Food Climate Research Network stated: There is only one way of being sure that you cut down on your carbon emissions when buying food: stop eating meat, milk, butter and cheese... These come from ruminants- sheep and cattle- that produce a great deal of harmful methane. In other words, it is not the source of the food that matters but the kind of food you eat. All things being equal, eating locally is better than eating food that has to be transported thousands of miles, but the environmental advantages of locavorism pale in comparison with those of going vegan. Lastly, one can choose to be an organic, vegan locavore to reap the environmental benefits of all three concepts. They are not mutually exclusive.

Using Quality Methods to Ensure Consistency of Care Assignment

Using Quality Methods to Ensure Consistency of Care - Assignment Example Mostly, the health professionals in the emergency department of any health care are not in a position to diagnose the disease the patient is suffering from. In the case study, the paramedics respond fast enough and give prompt treatment after a quality assessment of the patient’s condition. The paramedics in this study demonstrate professionalism in that they treat the patient on site before admitting him to the hospital for further diagnosis. It is also evident that it takes a lot of time before the patient could receive relevant medical care due to lack of facilities at the local community hospital. Once again, the paramedics show commitment by frequently assessing the patient at every level of treatment (Dlugazc, 2006). Most surprisingly, the paramedics use radio to send messages to the tertiary center which demonstrates poor communication. The recruitment of highly trained professionals requiring high remuneration is relevant for attaining quality performance evaluation. Additionally, organizations require relevant equipment and vehicles for ambulance services which require a huge sum of capital. The establishment of a better communication system such as the global positioning system in EMS requires allocation of hefty resources. The establishment of a quality management department is costly and the development of strategies to monitor improvement is important for achieving the defined goals (Dlugazc, 2006). A well trained emergency team is relevant for the realization of improved health care services. As highlighted before, the paramedics in the case are well trained and discharge their duties diligently. Reliable and accurate data for performance evaluation will heavily rely on the skills from these professionals and therefore the need for skilled practitioners. The various systems developed to offer services to the patients should have the capacity to collect relevant data for measuring performance. Training should be offered to the staff on

Ethical Theories In Solving Crime Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Ethical Theories In Solving Crime - Essay Example As you can see my strategy champions’ diplomacy and deliberate on what you should do. I will use my skills and interventions to sponsor a superior counseling strategy. Part of the plan will be to apply normative moral theories that I have with time learned from class to ensure that I properly solves the situation. To understand the scenes of crime in each case, especially the woman involved in crime, I will use consequentialism theory to understand what prompts the thoughts of crime. That is, what is the ultimate basis for any judgment about the rightness and the wrongness of the conduct I will further invite Jeremy Bentham Bentham and Burns believe on utilitarianism, which argues that people driven by their fears, hence they take precedence of their fears. Supportively, Eggleston argues that an action an action is moral when it produces the greatest amount of happiness. However, a problem will arise when the greatest happiness is achieved at the expense of a few. For that rea son, utilitarianism would seem to endorse crime when it produces the greatest total amount of happiness for the greatest number of people.

The Bloody Chamber Essay Example for Free

The Bloody Chamber Essay The major sense of desperation arises when the heroine enters the bloody chamber in her newly wedded husbands castle. The impact of this moment is powerful because up to now the bride is portrayed as a nave blushing bride. At this point it can be sensed that death awaits her. Once she passes the ill-lit corridor she crosses the boundary into the realm of death, mutilation, blood and horror. The passage leading up to this point has been thoroughly described by Carter. Angela Carter goes as far as to personify the chamber walls, they gleamed as if they were sweating with fright. Initially the narrative begins in an excited garbled state, but as the description becomes detailed it invokes a sense of immediacy. At the height of suspense we are led to the dead corpse with, the dead lips smiled making the situation even more drastic. Carter then strangely begins to describe the surroundings with elegant imagery, yet the skull was still so beautiful, had shapes with sheer planes. As the bride becomes familiar with her surroundings there is a growing sense of tension and when she finally comes face to face with the previous bride she is overwhelmed and is forced to escape the horrors. The imagery used at this point is particularly gruesome and highlights the use of dismal situations by Angela Carter, She was pierced, not by one but by one hundred spikes. Angela Carters use of desperate circumstances transforms the fairy tale conventions beyond its boundaries and into the realm of gothic fantasy. Carter also uses sustained periods of tense feelings to create an atmosphere of pressure fear. Also by adding horrific detail and descriptive references to sexuality the story no longer fits into the classic fairy tale genre. Angela Carter makes good use of narrative, plots, imagery and language to create scenes in horrific detail that helps to capture the readers attention. Angela Carter also uses unpromising situations in The Tigers Bridei to capture the audience. The Tigers Bride is a reworking of beauty and the Beast. Angela Carter tries to engage the reader by using language and imagery; in fact the daughter is not disgusted by the tiger but by his mask. Carter also uses alliteration with the soft sound of s making the description of the beast sound comforting where in reality he is far from it, He must bathe himself in scent, soak his shirt. The heroines reaction to the beastsisituation is pity and she confronts her fear by exposing herself to the beast as well. The actual moment of the tigers nakedness has a powerful impact on beauty. This can be supported by, The annihilating vehemence of his eyes, like twin suns. Beautys response to the beasts naked form is, I felt my breasts ripped apart as if I suffered a marvellous wound. The final transformation occurs when Beauty joins the tiger in his own environment, where the laws of the material world have no meaning. This is a key point where all the disturbed emotions become resolved. This can be proven when beauty says, I, white, shaking, raw approaching him as if offering, in myself, the key to a peaceable kingdom in which his appetite need not be my extinction. Carters use of a desperate situation where the heroine is not a victim but a character that is strong and in control, takes this story away from the traditional convention of fairytales. Also Beautys transformation takes this genre into the realm of fantasy. The strong references to sexuality also go against the conventions of fairy tales. In the climax of the story where the situation seems to become desperate and hopeless, Carter empowers beauty. Consequently beauty is able to control her desires. I believe by doing this Carter can manipulate the structure and rules of the genre. Cartersiuse of desperate situations and emotional instability totally contradicts the fairy Carters use of the above techniques takes apart the readers expectations of this genre, leaving them open minded to almost anything. Ultimately Carter thus keeps the reader interested and intrigued.

How to measure noise pollution

How to measure noise pollution Executive Summary Noise and pollution, and man was created noise harmful to health or welfare. Transport vehicles are the worst offenders, with aircraft, rail, trucks, buses, cars and motorcycles for producing excessive noise. Construction equipment, for example, breaker and bulldozers, also produce substantial noise pollution. Noise intensity is measured in units of dB. Logarithmic scale is dB, every increase of 10 dB represents a tenfold increase in the intensity of noise. Human perception of size is also consistent with a logarithmic scale, an increase of 10 dB is seen as almost double the size of the volume. Thus, 30 dB is 10 times more intense than 20 decibels and sounds loud and twice, 40 dB is 100 times more intense than 20 and sounds 4 times louder, 80 decibels is 1 million times more intense than 20 and sounds 64 times stronger. Distance reduces the level of decibels effective up to the ear. Therefore, the moderate movement of vehicles at a distance of 100 feet (30 m) rates about 50 decibels. To the driver with an open window or pedestrians on the sidewalk, and the rates of movement itself about 70 dB, that is, it sounds louder than 4 times. At a distance of 2000 feet (600 m), and the noise of aircraft taking off up to about 110 decibels, about the same century, the car only 3 feet (1 m) away. Introduction Noise pollution is a leak sound is unwanted, uncontrollable and unpredictable, and not necessarily strong in the lives of people of reasonable sensitivity. Using the reasonable person standard eliminates the idea that the sentence is subjective and unwanted sound. The sound can be returned unwanted noise or return to the Old Testament, and the stories of loud music, barking dogs, as well as the Romanian city where the old residents complained about noisy vehicles delivered in the cobbled streets around them. Has made the industrial revolution, and the growth of cities, the demand for transport in the world, even louder. With the modern world depends so enchanted with noise and noise technology for aircraft produced cars, helicopters, motorcycles, snowmobiles, jet skis, blowers and paper, amplified music, and bass-driven stereo systems, cars surrounding noise level to accelerate quickly. This increase in noise led to the research examines the impact of noise on the lives and activitie s of persons reasonable. The result was a set of evidence strongly suggests that noise is hazardous to good health, mental and physical health. Voices should not be so strong can not be considered interference, for example, drip of the faucet, President of the jet, or stereo late at night, a neighbor. Annoying noise, especially at night when you try to sleep, and sleeping well is essential for good health. Can exposure to noise over time be stressful, causing adverse health effects such as high blood pressure. Although there is a need for more research to strengthen the link noise and health, there is agreement that reduces the noise quality of life. Noise can be particularly harmful for children. Research shows that houses noisy slow cognitive development and language in young children. In addition, children who live and learn in a school near noisy roads, railways and airports and low scores in reading, and some children who live or go to school near the main airport and had high blood pressure. How to measure noise? Noise is measured in decibels, dB. And called on the tool used to measure the sound level. It is designed to respond equally to the human ear, and give an objective assessment of sound pressure level. Even if the noise is a major environmental problem, it is often difficult to determine the associated costs. The report identified the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development in the social costs of road transport four categories of the impact of noise from transport; Low real estate values Loss of mental health care costs for the treatment of loss of sleep, hearing problems or stress loss of productivity due to poor concentration, communication difficulties or fatigue due to inadequate rest Causes:- Causes of noise pollution traffic noise is the main source of noise pollution in urban areas. With the increasing number of vehicles on the road, and cause noise exhaust fumes from cars and trucks, buses and motorcycles is the main reason for the noise. The aircraft flying at low altitude above the height of national parks, wilderness areas and other areas of vacant, the greater the noise level significantly in these areas were not affected in the past. People living next to railway stations to put up with a lot of noise from locomotive engines, horns and whistles and switch management operating in the rail yards. This is the main source of noise pollution. to meet the needs of the basic necessities of life, and build highways, buildings and streets in the city is making a lot of noise. Breaker, compressors, bulldozers, loaders, dump trucks and paving breakers are the main sources of noise pollution at construction sites. Although not the main cause of industrial noise and adds noise. Machinery, engines and compressors used in the industries to create a lot of noise that is added to the negative hype already. plumbing, boilers, generators, air conditioners and fans create a lot of noise in buildings, in addition to noise conditions. equipment for the home, such as vacuum cleaners, blenders, and some noisy devices in the home. Although it does not cause a big problem, can not impact can not be ignored. Effects:- Hearing loss Mechanism of hearing loss stems from the shock of the stereocilia of the cochlea, and the main structure of the inner ear fluid. Finland, together with the middle ear sound pressure levels increases by a factor of twenty, in the sound pressure level is very high up to the cochlea, sound alarms even moderate weather. The underlying disease to the cochlea is the reactive oxygen species, which play an important role in noise-induced necrosis and apoptosis of stereocilia. Exposure to high levels of noise have different effects in a certain number of the population, and the involvement of reactive oxygen species suggests possible ways to treat or prevent hearing damage and cellular structures associated with them. The effects of the heart and blood vessels Noise associated with significant health problems, heart and blood vessels. In 1999, the World Health Organization has concluded that available evidence suggested a weak association between long-term exposure to noise above 67-70 dB (A) and high blood pressure. It was suggested that more recent studies show that the noise levels of 50 dB (A) at night may also increase the risk of myocardial infarction with the production of cortical is chronically elevated. Stress Conduct research on the rocky road of isolation of the United Kingdom manufacturer, and reveals in the UK in third place (33%) of victims of civil unrest, noisy parties are required to have prevented them from sleeping or stressed over the past two years. Almost one in ten (9%) of those affected by civil unrest, which claims to be left constantly disturbed and stressed. More than 1.8 million people, have made their lives hell, noisy neighbors and can not enjoy their home. The impact of noise on health may be a serious problem in all parts of the UK for more than 17.5 million Britons (38%) were troubled by the residents of nearby properties in the past two years. For a period of approximately ten (7%), British, and this is normal Conclusion Noise quiet because of the death and the concern of the community did not create much on the impact of noise on workers alike can not be relied upon in the industries, in particular, and the public in the community as a universal. Noise is of significant environmental pollutants contaminate our air, water and soil. It has the ability to destroy the bridges and the development of cracks in buildings. Can also cause skin noise and mental illness. It explained that the noise is a technology created the problem and all the noise is doubling every 10 years in the hand in hand with social progress and industry. Influenced to a large extent because of environmental pollution of noise, with the sunrise every day. Noise pollution in different parts of the increases in and around the city workplaces and homes. Noise levels peaked in the Twilight Zone when people are at work now, and traffic until it reaches during peak hours.

CASE: American Barrick Resources Corporation : Managing Gold Price Risk 1. In the absence of a hedging program using financial instruments, how sensitive would Barrick stock be to gold price changes? For every 1% change in gold prices, how might its stock be affected? How could the firm manage its gold price exposure without the use of financial contracts? Particulars for yr 1992($ million)| | Pretax earnings (Exhibit 2)| 223| Reductions in earning of gold sold at spot (1280mn oz x (422-345) (Exhibit 12)| (99)| Proforma Pretax Earnings| 124| Taxes @ 21% (Exhibit 2) | (26)| After Tax Earnings| 98| Thus in absence of risk management program the American Barrick stock would be more sensitive to gold price changes. This could also be observed from Exhibit 4 where the return on Barrick’s stock is continuously increasing as compared to other unstable major stocks in gold mining sector. Elasticity of Earnings & Profit for 1% change in Gold Price 1% change in gold price ($345)| $3. 45| Number of ounces| $1,280m| Additional pre-tax profits| $4. 4m| Additional after-tax profits| $4. 4 x (1-. 1) = $3. 5mn| Additional profits as % of earnings| 3. 5/98 = 3. 5% (approx)| Cash Flow = Earnings + Noncash charges| 98mn + 69mn = $167mn| Additional profits as % of cash flow| 3. 5/167 = 2. 1%| Thus with 1% change in gold price the earnings of Barrick would change by 3. 5%. The firm can manage its gold price exposure in following three ways: 1. Diversifying its business 2. Hedging against the gold price risk 3. Insuring against the gol d price risk Hedging involves entering into financial contracts and so does insuring against the gold price risk. Thus without being involved in any financial contracts Barrick can reduce its gold price exposure only by diversifying its business. 2. What is the stated intent of ABX’s hedging program? What should be the goal of a gold mine’s price risk management program? Stated intent American Barrick Resources Corporation is one the most financially successful gold-mining concerns in the world. The main stated intent of ABX’s hedging program was to profit handsomely even during a downtime, when gold prices are falling. The hedging position had allowed ABX to sell its commodity output at prices well above market rates. The main motive of the hedging program was to profit and gain an advantage over its competitors by hedging, at a time when the prices of gold were low and also interest rates were falling. Thus, the main intent of the hedging program was to position the organization as a low- cost commodity producer, willing to sacrifice potential profits from gold price peaks in order to level out potential losses in the future. Goal of a gold mine’s price risk management program The primary goal of a gold mine’s risk management program is to hedge the risk of falling gold prices and low interest rates, to ensure the minimum sale price of gold even when prices are declining. One of the main goal is to achieve financial stability. The risk management programs motive is to hedge risk in order to plan the future cash flows with certainty. Also, at a time, when an organization has immense production initially itself, the risk management program enables the firm to earn a predictable, rising earnings profile in the future inspite of rising production. Thus , the intent of the risk management program is to hedge the risk in such a manner, that its production decisions are not affected by the market price of gold. 3. What would convince you that a price risk management program created value for its shareholders ex ante? The American Barrick Resources Corporation, had since its inception a strategy of efficient risk management system to protect or hedge itself from the fluctuations in the Gold prices. The various risk management system coupled with favourable circumstances and opportunities of price locking, rendered an overall strong balance sheet for American Barrick. They were able to attract investors who shied away from gold mine investments due to price risk, due to the efficiency in hedging mechanism. In 1992, American Barrick produced and sold over 1. 28 Million Ounces of gold at a price of $422 instead of $345 market rate, as a result of the risk management program. Such benefits would lead to higher revenues, and thus higher profits and in turn render higher value for the shareholders. The organisation guidelines clearly specifed that the risk managemnt system should be such that they are fully protected against price declines for 3yrs and 20-25% for a decade. Thus such a mechanism helped create value for the shareholders as the profits of a Gold mine are dependent on fluctuation in gold prices and the difference between revenue and costs. Thus locking future prices, provided financial stability, enabling the organisation to avoids dips, and plan cash flows in a confident way, and in combination with the rising production, offered investors and shareholders a predictable , rising earnings profile in the future 1. How would you characterize the evolution of Barrick’s price risk management activities? Are they consistent with the stated policy goals? As a producer of commodity products, gold mining firms had virtually no marketing or distribution costs. There was always a ready market for their products, at market prices, once extracted from the earth & refined. Therefore a gold mine’s profits were a function of the quantity of its production & the difference between the prices at which it sold its output & its costs. To minimize the price risk, hedging is necessary. Being conservative in nature, company has maintained lower leverage. As per stated policy goals of company, Gold Hedging program gives American Barrick extraordinary financial stability. It protects shareholder’s wealth from the dip in gold prices. American Barrick’s hedging program evolved over history and used a wide range of tools to manage gold price risk. With gold financing, forward sales, options strategies & spot deferred contracts, company shed some of its price risk while maintaining flexibility to profit from rising gold prices. a. Gold Financing: In early days, Company’s gold price management activities were incorporated in financing for its mines. Company made its growth organically as well as inorganically. Almost every year, company madeacquisition of 1 gold mine company. For financing such acquisition, company used following tools Gold Trust: Paying specific percentage of gold production as return to investors Bullion Loan: Bank gives loan in gold form, company need to pay interest in gold terms only. Collateral is reserves company owns Limitations: Limited scope. b. Forward Sales: Production at Gold mine is highly inelastic in nature. ie Its not easy for the company to change the production in tune with the highly fluctuating demand, market prices. To avoid price risk, American Barricks used Forward Sales as tool by which company can lock in prices for future dates. Forward Sales are usually for relatively short delivery periods of under a few years. Normally forward sellers receive a premium (approx. 5%)above the current gold prices ensuring a guaranteed return of 5% for forward sellers. Limitations: Forward sale mitigates downside risk but also its ability to benefit if price rose. c. Options & Warrants: Hedging using Forward sales eliminated downside risk for the American Barricks but also its ability to benefit if price rose. To resolve this issue, from 1987 company started using Options and warrants. This allows company to hedge from downside risk and retain some benefits of rising prices. Board of American Barricks were ready to use options but in costless manner. Collars strategy: Simultaneously buying Put Option & writing Call Options on gold. Premiums and maturity of both call and put option is maintained same. This strategy ensured a price range for the gold in future giving opportunity to the company to get benefits from rising gold prices as well as downside protection if price dips. Limitation: Market for such options were liquid only for contracts with maturities under 2 years. This horizon was far shorter than 20 years of expected production currently in reserve. d. Spot Deferred Contracts: This tool gives additional feature to standard forward sale. In forward sale, the delivery date is fixed. In SDC there are multiple delivery dates. Seller chooses at which date he will pay gold. Forward price is decided at each roll over date depending upon current market price plus prevailing contango premium. ( SDC will be explained in detail in Q6. ) So during 10 years, American Barricks moved solely from getting gold financing, lock in future prices to getting strategic benefit due to inherent strengths of American Barricks over competitors using tools like Spot Deferred Contracts. 5. How should a gold mine which wants to moderate its gold price risk compare hedging strategies (using futures, forwards, gold loans, or spot deferred contracts) with insurance strategies (using options)? On what basis should these decisions be made? Once a firm has decided on either a hedging or an insurance strategy, how should it choose from among specific alternatives? One can characterize risk management strategies as either linear, hedging strategies (which eliminate all exposure to price fluctuations) or nonlinear, insurance strategies (which protect firms against falling gold prices only. ) Choices among instruments are determined by their relative costs (including transaction costs), interim liquidity requirements, accounting and tax implications, and the ability to customize the contract terms. For example, gold mining firms tend to use forward sales instead of futures contracts, at least in part to avoid the cash margin calls which futures transactions might entail. As another example, mining firms' preferences for spot deferred contracts over them functionally equivalent strategy of rolling forward contracts seems to be related to their relatively attractive accounting treatment. Distinguishing linear and nonlinear strategies becomes more difficult with dynamic trading. Suppose we observe a firm only selling gold forward. By a static measure, we would conclude that it was hedging. However, as is well known, through dynamic replication, a trader can create a put option by adjusting the amount of gold sold forward. Specifically, as the gold price falls, a dynamic replication strategy would have the firm short-sell more gold. Thus, distinguishing hedging from insurance strategies requires an analysis of the changes in a firm's equivalent short position (or delta-percentage) relative to changes in the price of gold. The sensitivity of cash flows and investment costs relative to changes in the underlying macro-variable are equal. If the sensitivities are equal, linear or hedging strategies will be optimal, otherwise firms would prefer to use non linear or option strategies. It is not apparent how to measure the degree to which mines face quantity risk. Firms facing borrowing constraints and that facing higher price risk might be more active users of options. Borrowing constraints might be more severe among firms with high operating costs, small market values, or small reserves; bankers might be reluctant to lend to high-cost producers that may be forced to shut-in production and to smaller firms with less collateral. It is reasonable to suspect that price risk might be more pronounced among mines with higher production costs. Firms with higher cash costs and those with smaller market values and reserves might be more likely to use options or price-contingent nonlinear strategies. 6. What is a â€Å"spot deferred contract? † Why has ABX chosen to rely on spot deferred contracts relative to other gold derivatives? Spot deferred Contract (SDC) is used by gold producers to hedge gold price exposure. It is a type of forward contract which has multiple delivery dates with the final one being 5 or 10 years after the initiation of the contract. The seller of SDC has the right to choose on which of the rollover date he will deliver the gold and can defer the delivery date till the end of the contract. Therefore spot deferred contract gives the right to the seller to choose the delivery date but has to deliver the quantity of gold specified in the contract. American Barrick entered into SDC with 1-year delivery or rollover dates where prices were set only for the first rollover date. On the rollover date, American Barrick could deliver the contract if forward prices were higher than spot prices or could roll the contract for the next period and sell the gold in the spot market. American Barrick chose to rely more on spot deferred contracts relative to other gold derivatives because of the following reasons: 1) Initially American Barrick entered into contracts for delivery within 3 to 4 years. Later on its bargaining power increased because of its large reserve base and strong financial position which made them negotiate agreements giving them 10 years within which to make delivery. 2) SDC was a way to profit from increase in price of gold yet set a minimum price on its sales of gold.

Animals Don’t Have Enough Rights

Animal rights Good morning my friends! how are you today? i’m going to start this discussion with a simple question â€Å" will you go to jail if you kill a human? †. Ofcourse you will, this is because humans have a right to live and to take ones life is a sin right? now let me ask you another question â€Å"will you go to jail if you kill an animal? †. The answer is no, why is this? because humans are more inferior then others? a life is a life whether its a human or an animal.Do you know that in one day an average human kills up to 3 animals? why? just so you can eat a good lunch or dinner at KFC or Mcdonalds. In my opinion animals dont have enough rights this is my topic for today. Did it ever occur to you that maybe animals have rights too? just because they cant speak doesnt mean they cant feel. Every year millions of animals are disected, infected, injected, gassed burned and blinded in hidden labs all over the world and most of the time without painkillers. A nd what for? ust so you can get the latest perfume or shampoo. Would it kill to use organic items? if they arent killed the animals get traumatised and are shaken up which is worse. The truth is, is that animal testing has endangered the life of humans because the results from animal testing cant be applied to humans. This is because animals and humans are completely different from each other! less than 2% of the diseases in humans appear on animals. In Australia last year, 6. 5 million animals were used in experiments. In these research labs just imagine how these animals would feel they are shoved in cages that are so small they get grazes and cuts on their skin from trying to get comfy, also when an animal dies it is kept in a wheelbarrow near the cages. The animals get scared and even sometimes attack each other. Despite the death of these animals before they even get tested, lab workers continue to stuff them in tiny cages, each animal branded with a barcode number instead of a name.In conclusion, animal testing is unreliable and sick, and now that there are alternatives to this (synthetic human skin, vitro testing) I suggest the government fully ban animal testing, we can help too! next time you go shopping buy animal friendly products only and then animal testing labs will be forced to shut down and try not to eat too much of meat so that the killing of animals can be reduced. lets make the world a better, safer, happier place for humans and animals Remember animals have rights too!

Is Trucking the Best Job for You

Is Trucking the Best Job for You Do you ever fantasize about quitting your job and finding a career on the open road, with just your thoughts and the radio to keep you company? If so, you’re not alone- and it may not be as far-fetched a career plan as you might think. Growing OpportunitiesMuch of the U.S. economy depends on goods finding their way to warehouses and stores all over the country- and in many cases, those goods are transported by long-haul tractor-trailer truck drivers. Fast delivery is becoming a major selling point for online retailers like Amazon and big-box stores like Wal-Mart and Target, which makes professional truckers an  important part of satisfying customer expectations.Truck drivers are a crucial part of an ever-expanding supply chain: by 2022, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the demand for heavy and tractor-trailer drivers will grow by as much as 11%.The LegworkThere are hurdles to a career in trucking- as tempting as it sounds, you can’t just show up, stan dard driver’s license in hand, and expect to drive a big rig to Ohio. All states require a specific Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to operate heavy trucks and tractor-trailers. Additionally, most trucking companies require a high school degree and completion of a professional truck-driving training program. There are also personal considerations. Are you willing to be away from home for days or weeks at a time? Do you have the time-management skills to meet rigorous delivery schedules in all weather, on holidays, or on your birthday? Being a truck driver requires a strong personal commitment as well as a professional one.Hitting the RoadLet’s say you’ve met all these requirements, made the necessary choices, and received the right training and recommendations. You’re ready to pack up your faithful dog and your toothbrush, and seek a trucking job. What’s the best way to do that? You may want to start by researching which trucking companies m eet your goals and your comfort level. Regional trucking companies may be able to offer you jobs closer to home. National trucking companies tend to have the broadest reach and the most access to available trucking jobs. You should also consider whether the company will hire a rookie driver right out of the gate- many companies want their new drivers to have 3 months to a year of driving time before they’ll consider hiring. This may sound discouraging to start (how do I get experience if no one will hire me without experience?), but it’s common in most career paths to start at the bottom by creating/locating opportunities and working your way up.The Money QuestionPerhaps the most important part of any job search is understanding what your salary will be- and can be. Like other fields, trucking offers its lowest salaries to drivers just starting out, especially if you don’t have the driving experience yet. However, you should know that while many industries have a wide gap between starting employees and long-time veterans, truck drivers have a pretty even field once you’re in it.The average starting pay for a truck driver is $13.81/hour, compared to an average of $18.37/hour (approximately $38,200/year) for all drivers. This kind of parity is often a reason people choose to get started in the trucking industry- your pay is not significantly less than more experienced colleagues’.If you’re seeking a career that can be challenging and fulfilling while paying the bills and letting you travel, trucking  could just be the right choice for you. And if you have the ability to find Zen even in the most obnoxious traffic jams, all the better!

Travel Writing Resources

Travel Writing Resources Travel Writing Resources Travel Writing Resources By Sharon I love travel writing, but the strangeness of the internet marketplace means that sometimes I have to write travel articles about places that Ive never been to. Ive now done several of these, and heres what I have learned from the process. As a writer you can make connections between what you have done and what you are writing about. Okay, so you may not have visited a water park in Tenerife, but you might have visited one in Disneyworld. You can use your memories of that experience to add local color and a bit of excitement to your writing about the new location. No matter where you go in the world, water parks, museums, parks and other places of interest have many of the same features, which you can use as a way of getting started. Its essential to do your research. Normally, I dont recommend Wikipedia as a research resource, but I have found that their profiles of countries and cities are generally well researched, with verifiable sources. If you want a starting point for an overview of the history, climate, industry and main attractions, Wikipedia works well. I always double check the information there with information from the destinations city or country guide site. These sites are also great places to find out about local amenities and annual events. A site that provides a good overview of these is Eventguide.com. When it comes to describing the attractions and knowing what people really felt about them, you cant do much better than TripAdvisor.com. You get a capsule description of the attraction and lots of great reviews. If 300 people found the same location amazing or awesome, then you are on firm ground when using those adjectives in your travel piece. You can usually find links to the attraction websites to get more information. This site also helps with nightlife, eating out and other aspects of a successful trip. Other resources I find useful are Yahoo Travel and the Lonely Planet site. Once you have the right research resources, its relatively easy to put together a piece that will give readers information about the place of interest. Ive travelled a lot, so I can use that experience to create some excitement for readers who are looking for information about a particular place. And since I love to travel, I am interested in learning about new places and excited about what they offer, so I dont have to fake that fizz. Ive also found some great new destinations as a result. Post-War Conformity in the 1950s and the Seeds of Change Essay

Post-War Conformity in the 1950s and the Seeds of Change - Essay Example According to my grandfather who is generally quite outgoing even is his current old age, the American society at the time was quite ideal as there were numerous jobs going around and teenagers could be able to land simple jobs such as milking cattle and performing chores and errands to earn extra money to be used in attending the cinema and dances. On the other hand, my reserved grandmother attests to its having been a rather difficult time especially in light of the fact that her family was not particularly well off and had a hard time affording the latest gadgetry and clothing. Although they were not quite well off, my great grandfather struggled to raise his family and was satisfied that he was able to provide them with a house, schooling and education, which caused my grandmother to be particularly proud of him although she at times covetedthe fancy clothing and gadgetry owned by her friends and their families. Having been brought up in a society that sought a high degree of conformity, my grandparents both worked hard toenjoyed an innate sense of security when they bought and owned similar electronics to their neighbors in addition to having a house of considerable size. Both of them attribute this acquired sense of security from the traits that they developed in the highly conformed American society of the 1950s. Week 13 Response: Response on Reform and Revolution in the 1960s Living in the United States in the current day and age, there are relatively very few causes that I would have an inclination to march or protest for. However, the one thing that I happen to be particularly sensitive about generally pertains to terrorism. This is because I happened to loose a number of close family, distant relatives as well as neighbours. Most of my friends can be able to account for at least one family member of close relation that suffered either directly or indirectly primarily as a result of te rrorism. The recent attempts by the United States to engage in a number of wars such as the Iraq and Afghanistan wars has severed to increase the number of families that end up suffering as a result of terrorism. I have had the experience of marching and protesting against a land grabbing case that wanted to grab one of the local playgrounds. I was still a small kid but strongly felt that it was wrong for the field to be grabbed since in my young mind, I would not have a place to go play with my friends or simply hangout. Our parents mobilized us in writing protest letters to the council and this resulted in positive developments as we managed to save our beloved playground. I would never consider engaging myself in beyond peaceful demonstrations as I strongly believe that it generally does not result in any good. I believe that violent demonstrations can at times defeat their purpose as the demonstrators gain a negative image and largely lose any support that they might potentially have accrued. Week 14 Response: Response on Conservatism and Domestic Events My grandfather has always been strongly conservative and is always slow on the uptake of any change to his established way of life. However, having a large number of African American friends, both my grandparents were quite pleased with the results of the civil rights movement in this period of history that caused them to more easily relate with their African American friends. My grandfather is particularly happy with America’s success in the space race but both of my grandparents are however critical negative aspects of this

Global banking issues Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 2

Global banking issues - Assignment Example Therefore, the reserve requirement is affected by the nature of both fed fund rate and feds discount rate. Also, the quantity demanded of reserve is determined by its price (interest rate) in the fed fund market. The quantity demanded increases with a decrease in interest rate and vice versa. In this regard, central banks can, therefore, affect the demand for reserves of commercial banks just by changing reserve requirement. Unlike other monetary tools, the impact of changes of reserve requirement is spread evenly across all banks to bring about neutrality. Changes in the reserve requirement tend to induce all banks to adjust their balance sheets rapidly. However, the reserve requirement is nowadays limited due to current sweep accounts and other loopholes of reserve requirement. Today central banks rarely use reserve requirement as the monetary policy tool because most banks operate around it (Thomas 418). The open market operate under the monetary base; that is, MB = C + R. Open market operations are preferable by most central banks because they can help to expand or contract monetary base to a precise level. With the use of open market operations, the central bank can reverse mistakes quickly because they are under its control. Open markets operations help to support the discount policy rate especially when there are excessive reserves. In the United States, Fed moves the equilibrium rate by use of open market operations toward the target established by the federal committee of open market operations. In addition, Fed can add reserves to the system by buying assets such as Treasury bond and can remove them from the system by selling these assets. Therefore, the central bank sells assets to increase the money base as well as the money supply in the system and vice versa. The central bank conducts open market operations to get the interbank lending rate near its target. Unlike other m onetary tools, OMO lack announcement effect because they are

The relationships between prison inmates and correction officers in Essay

The relationships between prison inmates and correction officers in regaurds to violence - Essay Example The workshops are managed by inmate trainers, but with the support and involvement of outside volunteer co-trainers. AVP workshops are typically two or three days in length, depending on the specific module. Both inmates, as well as outside trainers are volunteers, their qualifications being completion of all AVP modules in addition to the "train-the-trainer" workshop. Participants start with the basic workshop, progress to the advanced, and from there to the adjunct modules which include Bias Awareness and Manly Awareness. The ethnographic study, completed in May of 2001 (Sloane 2001), suggested that AVP participants' behaviors were modified by their involvement in these workshops. Prisons are essentially closed institutions. To all but the state employees who work in them, the prisoners confined in them and the officials who are permitted access, prisons are generally hidden from public view. Under special authority extended to the Correctional Association since 1846, members of its Prison Visiting Committee can enter prisons, interview inmates and staff, and communicate their findings and recommendations to state policymakers and the public. While the Correctional Association does not have authority to mandate change, it uses its knowledge of prison operations to advocate for reform to those who do have that authority. Based on observations of the Correctional Association's Prison Visiting Committee from visits to 25 state correctional facilities conducted between March 1998 and October 2001, key problems and areas for reform based on conversations with hundreds of inmates and correctional staff are mentioned here and/or described in the individual prison reports: - Youth Assistance Programs in which inmates and correction staff volunteer as counselors to at-risk youth from the community; - The "Puppies Behind Bars" program, where inmates train puppies to become seeing-eye dogs; - The piloting of an in-cell substance abuse treatment program for inmates in disciplinary confinement; - Mandatory academic programming for inmates who read and/or have a math score below the ninth-grade level; - Parenting programs featuring structured groups and parenting education classes; - Family visitor centers at 36 facilities to provide inmate family members with a place to refresh themselves prior to entering the prison; - The installation of Automatic Electronic Defibrillators in every state correctional facility; - Aggression Replacement Therapy provided by trained inmate facilitators to help prisoners identify and control aggressive behavior; and - Earned Eligibility and Merit Time programs, which reward certain nonviolent offenders who meet various program requirements with the possibility of early release. Motivation levels at the start of the workshops
